¡¡¡¡Lu Xiaguang (1906-1994), born in Fuyang, Anhui, has spent
his youth studying in Nanjinag Art School and Shanghai Art
School successively. In 1926, he joined in China Communist
Party. Studies aboard in Europe 1930 as suggested by his
tutor Xu Beihong. He has got admission to French Paris Advanced
Art Institution and Belgium Royal Art Institution with outstanding
achievements, and graduated in 1936. After the Resistance
War, he returned China with his wife Madrian¡¤ Lu and devoted
himself to the movement of Resisting Japanese and Saving
China.
¡¡¡¡And he went France to hold his individual picture show
upon invitation of French President Fanshang¡¤Aoliaoer. And
then settled down in France after that.
¡¡¡¡In
the same year, ¡°Lu Xiaguang Couple Studio¡± was opened by
him, for Chinese artists to France on investigation and
study. In the meanwhile, he donated to Fuyang County Middle
School of his hometown to establish Scholarship Fund, and
also founded a hospital there.
¡¡¡¡In his letter to President Jiang Zemin in 1993, Lu Xiaguang,
at the age of 90, expressed his willingness to contribute
some of his collection and works of art to te motherland.
President Jiang spoke highly of Lu and penned the inscription:
¡°Mr. Lu's patiotism shows clearly in his words.¡±
¡¡¡¡Following his will, and with efforts of all sides of Zhejiang
Provincial Party Committee and Government, these contributions
settled in Hangzhou and were displayed in ¡°Lu Xiaguang Art
Gallery¡± of Zhejiang Provincial Museum at the lakefront.
¡¡¡¡¡°Lu Xiaguang Art Gallery¡± displays some of his contributions,
in two parts.
¡¡¡¡The first part in show of first floor, is Lu¡¯s personal
drawings and works of famous artists collected by him. Lu¡¯s
oil painting and sketch technique blend skills of Chinese
traditional drawing, impacting people strongly and originally.
His oil paint bears obvious mark of impressionism and fauvism,
while deep in the artistic ideology, orient wash charm shows
somehow. Exhibited are his ¡¶Hometown Threshing Floor¡·, ¡¶Linying
Cave¡·and ¡¶African Charms¡· and ¡¶Bathing Lady¡·of his collection
etc.
¡¡¡¡And the other part on the second floor is cultural relics
of his collection. These artistic treasures of eras ranging
from New Stone Age to Modern Times, including ceramics,
bronze, gold and silver ware, ivory engraving and jade articles
etc. Such as Majiayao Cultural ancient painted pottery jar
of the New Stone Age, Longquan Kiln Tray of Yuan Dynasty,
Blue Glaze of Ming Dynasty, Green Pattern Flat Kettle of
Qing Dynasty, Jade Bird of Shang Dynasty, Lucky Animal Grade
Mirror of Tang Dynasty, and a few foreign relics and modern
artworks.
¡¡¡¡The moment people stand before these historic relics,
calligraphy and drawings, they feel as if they have touched
the strong and eternal pulse of human pursuing truth, goodness
and beauty, felt all patriotism zest of Lu and admired his
selfless devotion to art.
