¡¡¡¡Traditional Zhejiang arts and crafts are
well known for their long history, wide variety, vast range
of subjects, and exquisite workmanship. They are available
from jade ware, bronze ware, silk fabrics, and bamboo ware
to ivory ware. Artworks of lacquerwork, bamboo caving and
¡°three types of carvings¡± are grantly shown to people, which
represent several tidemarks of Zhejiang artwork development
history.
¡¡¡¡Lacquerware finds its hometown in Zhejiang. As early as
7000, Humudu people of Zhejiang Yuyao began to use lacquerware.
And Wenzhou and Hangzhou became two important production
center of lacquerware of Song Dynasty. Especially that of
Wenzhou ranked ¡°No.1 in the Country¡±. And ¡°invisble lift¡±
is the most characteristic local lacquer technique of Zhejiang.
It stacks patterns with paint ash upon priming. Lacquerware
displayed here is of high appreciating value and practical
value.
¡¡¡¡Another artwork full of Zhejiang local characteristics
is Huiji bronze mirror, which are cast from bronze. It's
generally fixed on the rack for use. The mirror surface
usually is grinded smooth and bright, while the back cast
with mirror knob and pattern, which of exquisite structure
and reflects custom and technique levels of the time. In
Eastern Han Dynasty, Huiji of Zhejiang (Shaoxing Now) is
the mirror casting center of the country since it produces
extremely beautiful bronze mirror. According to different
back figures, it can be divided into portrait mirror, immortal
animal mirror and dragon-tiger mirror. Looking at these
elaborate bronze mirror, you'll feel that it's not a piece
of daily commodity, but an artwork with extremely high appreciating
value.
¡¡¡¡In middle and late Qing Dynasty, Zhejiang also rose to
bamboo carving art. Especially bamboo carved readingroom
articles even reached perfect combination of technique and
utility. For example, the exquisite carved bamboo pen holders,
paper presses and arm rests, as well as bamboo root carving
for decoration of reading table, which are made to nature
shapes of the bamboo root, uniquely, dramatically, primitively
or delicately. Till late Qing Dynasty, Zhejiang bamboo carving
gradually becomes mainstream of the entire bamboo carving
art.
¡¡¡¡And to modern times, Zhejiang's ¡°three types of carvings¡±---
¡°Dongyang wood carving, boxwood carving and Qingtian stone
carving with regional features¡±became another milestone
of Chinese Art development history. Dongyang woodcarving
has had a history of more than 1200 years, named after its
important origin Dongyang of Zhejiang. It's a sort of decorative
embossed art, more fequently as deep embossed. It's particularly
suitable to present the content storylike, such as historic
tales, folk legends and so on. And Qingtian stone carving,
said to begin from Soutern Song Dynasty, has nearly a thousand
years' history till now. It selects Leaf-wax stone as carving
materials, by through carving mostly, and a touch of round
carving and embossed carving, to produce artworks of extremely
high appreciating value. Qingtian Stone Carving's feature
is carving subject to materials, the inborn shape and color
of the stone and create lifelike figures with bold and skillful
innovation.
¡¡¡¡Among artworks exhibition of the past dynasties, the most
noteable one is ¡°gold strip plate¡±of official dress, one
of important signs to indicate official posts. There are
strict regulations on number and material of strip plate,
the more, the higher the post. And top down, materials are
jade, gold, silver, bronze and rhinocerotic. The better
the material, the higher the post. ¡°Gold strip plates¡±displayed
by art gallery are unearthed in Wang Shiqi tomb of Ming
Dynasty, as many as more than 20 and all made of pure gold
exquisitely. You can know that the owner has had remarkable
position at that time. Of course, the saying goes that ¡°gold
is valuable while jade invaluable¡±. Maybe only the emperor
is noble enough to wear jade strip plate.
