As one of the provinces which develop their museums relatively earlier, Zhejiang has its modern museology traceable to the founding of Zhejiang West Lake Museum in Nov. 1929.
　　After the establishment of P.R.China, especially after its reform and open-up, Zhejiang Provincial Museum has encountered unprecedented development. Museums and memorial halls of the whole province have been up to more than 140, a museum network group of strong local color taking shape. Theme museum construction of local places features museological development of Zhejiang. Rich native products and cultural accumulation compose unique conception of Zhejiang traditional culture. Recently, Zhejiang has built a lot of high-grade, high-level and fairly influential theme museums, they are, e.g. China Silk Museum, China Tea Museum, Hangzhou Southern Song Dynasty Imperial Kiln Museum, Hangzhou Huqingyutang Herbal Museum and so on. In addition, some museums have been completed and opened in succession, including new hall of Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Zhejiang Natural Museum Show Room, Hemudu Site Museum, Liangzhu Cultural Museum, Zhenhaikou Coast Defence Historic Memorial Hall, Jiaxing South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall, Zhujie Museum, Yiwu Museum, Qingyuan Pasania Fungus Museum, Zhoushan Museum, Shangyu Museum etc; and some are under tense construction such as Wenzhou Museum New Hall, Dongyang City Museum, Jinyun Museum etc; Moreover, China Financial Museum, Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum, Daishan Salt Industry Museum, Jingning She Nationality Museum, Yunhe Wooden Toys Museum etc; theme museums with all new contents are under active construction preparation. In the meanwhile, socially supported museums have also added fresh vigor to rapid development of Zhejiang museum and refreshed a number of specialty museums. For example, Hangzhou Zhangxiaoquan Museum, Hangzhou Dujingseng Raw Tapestry Museum, Ningbo Garment Museum, Jiangnan Fantastic Stone Museum and Anji Bamboo Museum etc have already completed and opened. And Wenzhou Shoe Culture Museum, Yuezhou Textile Museum, Zhejiang Traditional Agricultural Museum, Zhejiang Daily Commodities Museum etc are under tense construction or preparation. The whole province has formed museum network led by Provincial Museum and propped up by city and part of county level museums. General museums, memorial museums and theme museums take 1/3 each, being fairly reasonably structured.
　　Now museological institutions of Zhejiang are trying to improve fine works consciousness and showing this kind constantly. They are playing an active role in popularizing patriotism, revolutionary tradition education and scientific knowledge. Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Museum, Shanxing Dayu Mausoleum, Jiaxing South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall, Zhenhaikou Coast Defence Historic Memorial Hall and Hemudu Site Museum have been nominated as national patriotism education demonstrative bases in recent years, and Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Museum, Hemudu Site Museum and Zhejiang Provincial Museum as Excellent Patriotism Education Base of national relics system by National Cultural Relics Bureau. In the list of provincial patriotism education bases released by Zhejiang Province, cultural relics protection institutions (cultural relics spot), museums and memorial halls belonging to cultural system take up above 60%, showing special position of cultural relics and museums in patriotism education. Various Zhejiang museums receive a yearly increasing number of audiences. According to undercount, museological institutions of Zhejiang Province hold 400-odd exhibitions per annum and receive audience exceeding 10 million mentimes.
